Most travellers do not realise that Borneo is not a country at all, but an island. The world’s third largest island in fact—situated in south East Asia—is shared between Indonesia (Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) and Brunei, one of the world’s richest kingdoms. Spanning an area of almost 800,000 square kilometres, it is located in the Malay Archipelago, south of the Philippines and north of Java.
